PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, THE NUTS & BOLTS
Making changes without a road map?

Nikki Michelle Soo, Bestselling Author | Fun & Productivity Coach

Why is mapping the most important piece in any change process?

Because no one chooses to stumble around blindly in a thick forest, not knowing where the trails are.

It’s exhausting, and it’s a waste of time with many opportunity costs.

Yet this is exactly what most people are doing when they go through change – either for their own personal growth, or for organisational change.

But you are not most people.

You want clarity. And you want the fastest way through to your goal, and out of a problem.

This is what you get with a change strategy map. It’s the very first thing I do in my coaching program.

This is about identifying links between symptoms and causes… mapping how they relate… and also working out the best strategy for moving forward.

What is a change strategy map?

Mapping gives you a big picture, the lay of the land.

A good map shows you the links between symptoms and causes.

Here’s a story that highlights this brilliantly. It’s the story of the Spirit Tower, from ancient Chinese mythology.

(Spirit Tower is also an acupoint on your body, used for acupuncture or acupressure. It’s on your back, along your spine, right near your heart.)

The Emperor and the Spirit Tower

The Emperor is searching for answers.

Surrounded by politics and advisers giving conflicting advice, the Emperor knows that she needs clarity. Especially before taking on any big changes.

So she travels to a special place in the kingdom, to the Spirit Tower.

There, she climbs to the top of this tower and gains a vantage point.

Revealed before the Emperor is the entire landscape of her kingdom.

She can see how things fit, where the trouble is coming from, and where the solution is.

Where would you like to go?

And what do you need to get there?

She can discern which matters are symptoms, and which are the causes.

She understands now how things are connected. And how one relatively small tweak can resolve a great many issues.

From this vantage point, most importantly, she can pinpoint the specific tweak required.

This is why mapping works

This is why change strategy maps work.

And it’s why I draw up a visual, change strategy map for every new client that I work with – right on Day 1.

If you have a vantage point, then you have clarity.

And you know how to solve the puzzle.

There’s no point beating around the bush, or stumbling around in a thick forest.

When my clients see their visual map, it’s a big “Aha!” moment for them.

Looking at the map, you understand why certain habits like anxiety, or procrastination, or guilt or self-sabotage have persisted. Along with any negative thoughts or self-talk.

You can trace them back to an underlying cause – right on the change strategy map before your very eyes.

You also see the connection between your habitual thoughts or behaviour that you didn’t think were related.

It’s liberating when you can see that in front of you, and hear that explained as the map gets built before your very eyes.

For many clients, it’s a breakthrough in itself – just seeing the visual map.

You become aware of what’s really been happening.

And once you can point specifically to the underlying cause, you are in a position to do something about it – in a smart and strategic way.

Without a visual strategy map in your hands, most people get stuck trying to address the most annoying symptoms. Or what I call “beating around the bush.”

One small tweak with a great ripple effect. And you only get to do that with a good strategy map.

Armed with a good change strategy map, you no longer need to run around “putting out fires” on a symptom level.

When you address the underlying cause, you get a more elegant solution. And a faster one too.

This is the key to changing habits and patterns quickly and effectively, like:

  • procrastination and the guilt that comes with it
  • self-sabotage
  • frequent anxiety
  • a stubborn inner critic or inner perfectionist

One small tweak with a great ripple effect. And you only get to do that if you have a good map. This is what I do at the start of my coaching program.
